Azo dyes are provided and are the reaction product of diazotized 2-amino-5-nitrothiazole and a coupling component of the formula: <IMAGE> wherein R1 is hydrogen or lower alkoxy; R2 is alkyl of 1-4 carbons, phenyl, tolyl or chlorophenyl; N IS 1 OR 2; THE HYDROXY ALKYL GROUPS BEING REACTED PRIOR OR SUBSEQUENT TO COUPLING WITH AT LEAST STOICHIOMETRIC QUALITIES OF CERTAIN ACID HALIDES AND A MONO- OR DI-LOWER ALKYL FORMAMIDE OR ACETAMIDE.
