The pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder is made from a thin walled tube (16) which is brazed or soldered to a thin walled end cap (15). The end cap (15) is pressed or spun from sheet metal and is thus much lighter and cheaper than a similar cap machined from a solid block. As an alternative to brazing the tube may be secured by identing it with a semi-circular groove (19) for a spring ring (20) which also fits in a corresponding groove (18) in the end cap (15). A second groove (17) is formed in the end cap (15) for an O-ring (21) which provides an effective seal against the internal pressure.
