Drive from the engine is transmitted by a chain to a sprocket wheel (11) mounted freely at the junction of the two wheel shafts. two sliding rings (15) one on each side of the sprocket, carry dogs (13) to engage in slots in the sprocket and are spring (12) loaded towards the sprocket. Between each ring and the shaft is fitted another ring (16) freely mounted on the shaft. The mating faces of the two rings (15, 16) have a sinusoidal form for meshing. Gaps between the sinusoidal teeth on the free ring (16) allow a manually operated spigot (18) to be inserted and stop the ring which rotates when the clutch is engaged. As the ring is stopped, the sinusoidal teeth force the sliding ring outwards along the shaft, disengaging the dogs. On further insertion, the spigot enters recesses (19) in the sliding ring to prevent intermittent re-engagement.
|
