The gripping tool uses the relative sliding motion of two adjacent and parallel bars (1, 2) to effect jaw (1', 2') operation. A hand lever (3) which is pinned (4) to the fixed bar (1) is pivoted to promote sliding of the mobile bar (2). Transmission from the hand lever (3) to the sliding bar (2) is effected by a pivoting (7) ratchet (6') lever (6) which engages a selected identation on a rack (5). By engaging the ratchet lever (6) in different rack points the jaw span may be varied to suit a wide range of workpiece sizes. A blade spring (8) may be used to maintain the ratchet lever (6) engaging the rack (5). a pivoting stirrup (9), which extends from the hand lever (3) to envelope both the sliding bars (1, 2) engages saw teeth (10) on the outer face of the static bar (1).
|
