The process comprises contacting the water with an air-ionised air mixt. contg. >=5 x 106 ions/cm3 and providing a magnetic field in the contact region.- The process is used to purify swimming pool water or rendering well water potable. It kills spores (e.g. E. coli) by electroshock, economically in a reasonable time. An unexpected side-effect is the additional bacterial action of CO2 formed when carbonate-contg. water is treated in this manner
