<p>A rapid method of cleaning the membrane surfaces of membrane separation units comprises partially filling the passageways of the units with water, periodically purging the passageways with a continuous air stream at super-atmospheric pressure to cause a non-plug flow of water droplets at high speed to remove deposits, this operation being performed after conducting an osmotic back flushing, the purging step being repeated to effect removal of all deposits and all water droplets without permitting drying of the membrane at any stage. The method is much faster than plug flow liquid cleaning solns., and uses minimal amounts of cleaning liquid.</p> |
