1493230 Quenching hot-rolled steel ARBED ACIERIES REUNIES DE BURBACH-EICHDUDELANGE SA and CENTRE DE RECHERCHES METALLURGIQUES-CENTRUM VOOR RESEARCH IN DE METALLURGIE 30 Sept 1976 [30 Sept 1975 8 July 1976] 40649/76 Headings C7A and C7N A hot-rolled steel product (rod, bar, section, sheet or plate) emerging from the mill is quenched by fluid to produce a surface layer of martensite and/or bainite, which is then tempered by residual heat from the core. The conditions are so adjusted that the maximum temperature attained by the surface after quenching is 600‹ to 730‹C. That maximum temperature may be selected to produce a desired value of elastic limit in the steel according to a predetermined relationship. Preferably the surface temperature of the quenched material is measured at the entry to a still air cooling stage, and conditions adjusted accordingly. |
