<p>An automatic welding apparatus (10) includes a drive assembly (12) for pulling a movable carriage (16) along a weld joint by drawing a weld cable (14) through the drive assembly (12). The weld cable (14) is attached to a welding nozzle (18) adjustably mounted on the carriage (16). A method of welding a weld joint using the automatic welding apparatus (10) includes moving the carrier (16) and the attached nozzle (18) by moving the carrier (16) and nozzle (18) along the joint by pulling the cable (14) in a direction substantially parallel to the joint. The present invention is particularly useful in arc welding applications where access to the weld joint is restricted or hindered.</p> |
