The electromechanical line advancing unit for a paper web incorporates an electromagnet (27). This associated with a sensor lever (23) for detecting an externally spoold paper web (6) as well as a lever (21) for adjusting the lift created by the magnet. A logic circuit executes a time- and line-controlled transport of the paper web. The single electromagnet executes all the necessary functions. The degree of movement of the sensor lever is selectively adjustale to the required line distribution by an adjusting pin (35). A plastic catch (42) acting on the outer edge of the spool disc (16) prevents its motion being reversed.
