The novel dioxolane derivs. are of formula (I): (where R = formyl; m = 0 or 1; R3 = H or 1-3C alkyl; R4 = opt. branched 2-10C alkyl, 5-7C cycloalkyl, or aryl; or R3 and R4 together form an opt. branched 4-7C alkylene gp.). Used as synthetic perfumes, with fruity, earthy, or herbaceous scents; some (I) have a "fresh washing" odour. Can be used in soaps, detergents, body treatment prepns., etc. Cpds. (I) are prepd. by hydroformulating vinyldioxolanes e.g., 2-methyl-2-hexyl-4-vinyl-1,3-dioxolane with CO and H2 using a Co or Rh catalyst at pref. 60-130 degrees C/20-700 bars pressure.
