The non-return valve for use between an air compressor and a tank comprises a spring-loaded stem (1) having a head (2) capable of closing the valve by slidably entering into the valve inlet passage. The closure movement of the head is limited by a disc (8) provided on the stem inside the valve chamber. The stem and head are metallic and the inlet passage comprises a cylindrical plastics insert (3) in the valve housing (14). The head has an axial flange abutable with adjacent end of the insert. The flange gives rise to a toroidal vertex when the valve opens. The arrangement improves stability of operation.
