Torque converter for fully automatic transmission - has double bevel gear connection with intermediate flywheel shaft for smooth speed ratio gradation

The automatic and smooth transition torque converter provides power transmission between two neighbouring shafts (2, 3) and its action depends on the utilisation of inertial forces. Speed ratios from 1:0 to 1:1 can be selected. The drive shaft (2) and power take-off shaft (3) are axially aligned in a rotating bearing housing (1), and are coupled via two bevel gear pairs (4, 5 and 6, 7) with an intermediate shaft (8) rotating at right angles to the main axis (2, 3) and carrying two flywheels (9, 10). If teh unit is used only as a clutch the one bevel gear pair (4, 5) is omitted and the drive shaft (2) is rigidly coupled to the bearing housing (1).
