Rotary forging of gun barrels - using axially driven mandrel to obtain profiled bore during forging

The blank is fed through the forging dies over a locked mandrel to obtain both the outside dia. of the gun barrel and also the parallel portion of the bore; the mandrel is then unlocked and fed axially through the dies to produce the conical portion of the bore. In the pref. machine, the rotating dies are driven radially inwards by rotary cams using a constant stroke; and the mandrel has a parallel portion followed by a conical region. The profiled bore is produced in a single forging operation.
