1468955 Cooking apparatus EAST CENTRAL STATE PROJECTS DEVELOPMENT AGENCY 23 May 1974 23026/74 Heading A4D [Also in Division B1] A machine 10 for use in the conversion of cassava pulp into garri comprises an elongate trough 12, a rotatable shaft 32 carrying blades 36 around its circumference and along its length, at least those blades towards an inlet 40 of the trough having holes (66) and at least those blades towards an outlet 38 of the trough being L-shaped when viewed in sections transverse to the shaft axis and thereby including flanges (68). The blades stir the trough contents and encourage it away from the inlet, where a predominance of cassava pulp flows through the said holes, towards an outlet, where a predominance of garri is carried around the rotating shaft by the flanges. Metal horizontal trough 12 is heated at its underside and has a sectional, vented cover. An electric motor 34 rotates shaft 32 on which the blades are arranged in a discontinuous helix overlapping each other in the shaft's axial direction and making an acute angle with the axis. If the trough is inclined the said angle may be zero. The angle is pre-set and the blade is sprung radially outwardly to scrape the trough. The areas of the holes decrease towards the outlet, the last blade having no holes at all. Flanges (68) cause, turbulence, aeration and cooling of the cassava pulp and throw it to one side of the trough, more pulp being thrown nearer the outlet because the flanges are wider, transversely to the shaft axis, on the blades towards the outlet. The cassava is thus gelatinized and dehydrated until dry garri is produced. |
