1468639 Chucks JACOBS MFG CO Ltd 9 Feb 1976 [1 April 1975] 13271/75 Heading B3B A drill chuck in which a body 10 has inclined slidable jaws 18 actuated by a nut 22 rotatably mounted in a circumferential groove 20 in the body and in screw thread engagement with the jaws, and in which a bevel gear element 28 is provided on the nut 22 to be engaged by a chuck key to actuate the chuck, is characterised in that the bevel gear teeth 42 are "blind", e.g. they are connected at their radially inner ends to form a strengthening collar 44. In one embodiment this collar provides an annular face 46 which is used to axially locate an integral nut 22 and bevel gear element 28 in the body. The bevel gear element may be a complete ring and is used to hold together two nut halves in the groove 20. When the nut and bevel gear element are formed integrally, the two halves thereof are retained together in the groove 20 by a pressed steel sleeve 32. In one embodiment with a separately formed bevel gear element (Fig. 6 not shown), the collar 44 and annular face 46 stand raised from the cylindrical surface of the body and the chuck key has a spacer collar (60) to enable meshing of the gear teeth. The bevel gear element may be made from a sintered metal, and two notches 56 facilitate splitting it diametrically. The sleeve 32 may be a machined item (Fig. 5 not shown) or a plastics material (Fig. 7, not shown). A threaded spigot 12 or a threaded bore, may be used to mount the chuck to a power driven spindle. |
