Steryl refers to cholesteryl, #-sitosteryl, campesteryl or stigmasteryl or their mixtures, and the starting materials contain R<SP>2</SP>SO 2 - wherein R<SP>2</SP> is alkyl or optionally substituted aryl. These starting materials are prepared from steryl-#- D-glucosides and R<SP>2</SP>SO 2 Cl.
