1469179 Castors ACOUSA SAXON SA 15 Aug 1974 [1 Sept 1973] 36009/74 Heading A4U [Also in Division F2] A castor for hospital beds comprises a roller 24 mounted in a fork 13 rotatably attached to a fixing pin 1 by a combined axial and radial roller bearing 10, a spring-loaded spindle 5 extending axially through the pin 1 and being operable by a linkage member 3 to interengage toothed discs 15, 16 to prevent swivelling of the fork 13, and to engage a brake shoe 22 with the periphery of the roller 24. The spindle 5 is hexagonal in crosssection to prevent its turning. A part 11 of the roller bearing 10 is secured to the fork 13 by screws 12 which also serve to guide rectilinear movement of a brake member 14 on which the brake shoe 22 is hinged for adjustment by a screw 23, the brake member 14 being retained by a spring 17 passing upwardly through the spindle 5 to an anchorage on a bush 6. A spring-loaded bolt 18 is engageable in indexing holes 21 in the disc 16. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the spring 17 is replaced by a headed screw (26) engaging in the bottom of the spindle 5, a spring (25) being interposed between the head of the screw and the disc 15. In a third embodiment Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the disc 16 has two diametrically opposed peripherical recesses (31) which in the uppermost position of the disc are engeable by a radial projection (32) on the fork 13 to prevent swivelling of the fork and to retain the roller 24 in a particular orientation relative to the bed. Moving the spindle 15 to an intermediate position permits swivelling of the fork and movement of the roller. The brake member 14 is pivoted to the fork and is moveable downwardly against a spring (36) disposed between the brake member 14 and the fork. The brake shoe 22 is replaced by a headed screw (37) adjustably engaged in the bottom of the brake member 14. |
