A machine tool comprises a turret head 16 provided with a plurality of radial tool support stations on its periphery an indexing means to selectively rotate the turret head 16 to index one of the tool support stations into an operating position PO confronting a workpiece W wherein at least one of the stations carries a single tool spindle 23 and at least one of the stations carries a multiple spindle unit 21, and the machine tool including a spindle drive means aligned at the operating position PO to rotate either the spindle 23 or an imput shaft of the multiple spindle unit 21, tool storage means 54 to present a tool T1 into a changing position P1, and tool changing means 60, 63 for interchanging single tools only between the tool changing position P1 and the single tool spindle 23 at the operating position PO. The turret head 16 is indexed by a driven spur gear 32 in mesh with a ring gear 31. Cooperating annular tooth arrays 17, 18 locate the turret head in the indexed position and a fluid pressure cylinder means 45 46, 47 raises the turret head to separate them before indexing. The spindle drive means comprises a driven gear 34 slidably splined to a sleeve 33 housing a clutch arrangement 36, 39 spring biased to engage driving keys 35 into recesses 29 on the spindle 23 or unit 21. The drive clutch is disengaged by a fluid cylinder 78 and lug 40 engaging and sliding the gear 34 along the sleeve 33. At the operating position a fluid pressure operated rod 41 can overcome springs 28 to release a ball locking sleeve arrangement 25, 26 which grips a stem 24 on a tool T1. During engagement of a tool T1 in the socket 22 of the single spindle 23 the spindle drive is rotated slowly one revolution to allow engagement of a spring biased driving key with a recess in the tool flange (Fig 4 not shown). The tool storage means is an indexable drum 54 having sockets 55 for the tools T1. A rotary arm 63 having pairs of tool clamping means 61, 62 respectively at each end is mounted for movement parallel to the spindle 23 to enable tools T1 to be withdrawn respectively from a socket 55 and spindle 23 before the arm 63 is rotated 180 degrees The turret head 16 and the indexable drum 54 are mounted on an elevating head 14 which moves vertically relative to the workpiece W</p> |
