<p>1469055 Electroslag remelting; making ingots LEYBOLD - HERAEUS - VERWALTUNG GmbH and VACUUMSCHMELZE GmbH 28 April 1975 [22 May 1974] 17637/75 Headings B3F and B3A [Also in Divisions C7 and H5] Grinding-swarf containing, e.g. Ni, Co, W, Cr, Mo, Ti, and/or Nb is compacted to form a consumable electrode 1 which is remelted in a mould 12 to form an ingot 18 containing the desired metals. The compacting may be by isostatic pressure in a cylindrical or prismatic thermoplastic container, or conventionally, with binders. The electrode preferably has a pin 35 embedded in an end to facilitate attachment to an electrode holder 3. The electrode 1 is melted by passing a current to the electrode and to either the mould wall 13 or floor 19, both water-cooled, in the presence of a liquid slag 16. Permanent electrodes may also be used, for temperature control, and ordinary alloy electrodes, to modify the ingot composition. The electrode holder 3 is moved axially of a column 4 as the melting proceeds (controlled by a unit 30 acting on a motor 11). The unit 30 responds to voltage drop through the slag 16 and superimposed pulses. An electronic processor applies signals to the motor 11. 1-10% Of an oxygen getter, e.g. Al, may be added to the swarf prior to compaction.</p> |
