<p>1418343 Quadripolymers SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 28 Feb 1973 [28 Feb 1972] 9814/73 Heading C3P Halogen containing, sulphur curable, normally amorphous quadripolymers of (1) ethylene, (2) anαmonoolefin of formula RCH = CH 2 where R is a C 1 -C 20 hydrocarbon radical, (3) a hydrocarbon containing a plurality of non- conjugated unsaturated bonds and (4) a halogenated norbornene of formula where one R 1 -R 4 is a halogen atom or a C 1 -C 20 halohydrocarbon radical and the R's are hydrogen, halogen or a C 1 -C 20 hydrocarbon or halohydrocarbon radical are produced by contacting monomers 1-4 with a catalyst comprising (a) at least one organoaluminium compound AlR<SP>1</SP>nX 3-n where R<SP>1</SP> is a C 1 -C 20 hydrocarbon radical, X is halogen and n is 1À5 to 3 and (b) at least one titanium and/or vanadium compound with a molar ratio of (a) to (b) of 5: 1 to 0À5 : 1. The catalyst may contain electron donor compounds and/or oxidizing agents. The copolymer may be compounded with a diene or butyl rubber and vulcanized. In the examples ethylene is polymerized with (2) propylene or butene- 1 (3) 5-ethylidene norbornene or dicyclopentadiene and (4) 5-chloromethyl-, 5-bromomethyl-, 5-chloro-, 5,5,6-trichloro- or 5#-chlorooctyl-6- octyl-2-norbornene in n-hexane or toluene in the presence of hydrogen (Example 4) using as catalyst ethyl aluminium sesquichloride, diethyl aluminium chloride or triethylaluminium and VOCl 3 or VCl 4 and (in Example 7) pyridine.</p> |
