Epoxyalkyl phosphonic acids of formula (I)RCHCH-P(O) (OR')2 and their salts with alkali(ne earth(metals or amines, are prepd. by reacting a dialkyl chloroacetylene phosphonate Cl-C=CP( O)(OR') with a Grignard reagent to obtain R-C=C-P(=O)(OR') which is selective hydrogenated to a cis alkenyl phosphonate R-CH=CH-P(=O)(OR')2 which is then subjected to epoxidation to (I). (R and R' are each H or alkyl or R' is a salt forming radical or an optically active amine). (I) are antibacterial agents.
