A control valve for a hydraulically operated clutch, has a manually operated slide spool movable between clutch engage and release positions in which a reduced diameter part of the spool is connected respectively to a pressure supply port (4) and a drain port (6). To bias the spool into the engage position when situated in that position, the axial area of the spool giving rise to a force in the direction of the engage position is greater than the oppositely facing area. The smaller area may be that of a spring-loaded sleeve. The larger area may include an auxiliary piston at the end of the spool.
