1324388 Applying reinforcing rings to containers H REHRIG 26 Oct 1970 [24 Oct 1969] 50708/70 Heading B5D A reinforcing ring 14 is applied beneath the rim 10 of a plastics container 1 by apparatus comprising squeeze arm assemblies 40 (Fig. 3) which force the container walls inwardly until the outside dimensions of its rim 10 are less than the inside dimensions of the ring 15. The squeeze arm assemblies each comprise a pivoted squeeze arm 42 operated by an hydraulic ram 50 and carrying at its upper end a press pad 66 to contact the corner edges of the container and curved surfaces 65 to deflect the side walls inwardly. The reinforcing ring 15 is supported by a member 76 on each of the squeeze arms so that upon their retraction the ring will engage the rim. If the container is not highly resilient or if the ring 15 has upstanding tangs 17 for engagement with apertures 12 in the rim 10, an axially movable plunger 80 (Fig. 4) is provided to press the container walls outwardly and to position the walls for co-operation with rimlifting fingers 136. The plunger 80 is lowered until surface 80a contacts the interior of the side walls, arms 110 carrying the fingers 136 are pivoted downwardly by an hydraulic ram 116 and the fingers 136 are extended by an hydraulic ram 130 to raise the rim 10. The plunger 80 is then further lowered to press the container walls into contact with the ring 15, the arms 110 are raised and a surface 94 of the plunger 80 presses the rim 10 downwardly over the ring 15. Hydraulic and electrical control systems for the apparatus are described. |
