High-frequency coaxial cable with polystyrene foam dielectric - with increased lateral stability and water resistance

Cable comprises inner and outer conductors, and between them a dielectric consisting of >=1 layer of foamed polystyrene surrounded by a thin layer of unfoamed plastic pref. polyolefin. The dielectric pref. has >=2 layers, comprising alternate layers of foamed and unfoamed plastic, pref. starting with a layer of unfoamed plastic over the inner conductor. The cable is pref. used as a television cable. Compared with a conventional coaxial cable with an ordinary cellular plastic dielectric, the cable has increased mechanical lateral stability, increased bending capacity, and increased lateral water resistance. The outer conductor is e.g. an overlapping metal foil opt. with the edges adhered or welded together.
