A tilting or rotating mirror system is used, together with a detector registering received pulses. Movement of the test station itself produces the line sweep. A laser (1) is towed at an appropriate distance above the sea bed, together with the mirror system and detector. The two mirrors (5, 7) are mounted on either side of a motor (9). The process has been developed from experience gained in the Pacific Oean and is applicable to a search for nodules of valuable metals such as copper, nickel, cobalt and manganese.
