Charge coupled device for 2-phase operation has an area of opposite doping to the substrate on the substrate surface under the electrically insulating layer under each pair of electrodes. All pairs of electrodes are connected to a first timing lead. There is also another electrode between each pair of electrodes and all these other electrodes are connected to a second timing lead. The device has an insulating layer of variable thickness on the surface of a doped semiconductor substrate with a series of pairs of electrodes alternately on the thinner and thicker parts. Higher density information storage is possible.
