1515129 Substituted 2,5-diamino-benzoic acids GAF CORP 15 Oct 1975 [10 Dec 1974] 42305/75 Heading C2C [Also in Division G2] The invention comprises compounds of the formula wherein R 1 is H, halogen or an aliphatic or aromatic group; R 2 is H, and R 3 and R 4 are H or aliphatic or aromatic groups; or R 2 and R 3 together form a heterocyclic ring which may contain a further N, O or S atom; or R 3 and R 4 together form a heterocyclic ring which may contain a further N, O or S atom; with the proviso that at least one of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 or the combined effect of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 is such as to render the compounds oil-soluble and essentially non-diffusible during development in an alkaline processing composition. They may be obtained by (a) reacting a 2-halo-5- nitro-benzoic acid of the formula with an amine of the formula in a solvent and then reducing the nitro group of the resulting intermediate using H 2 and a catalyst or chemical reduction; (b) when R 2 and R 3 do not form a ring, hydrolysing a compound of the formula with H 2 SO 4 , reacting the resulting halo-nitrobenzamide with an amine of the formula hydrolysing the resulting amino-nitrobenzamide with HCl and reducing the resulting intermediate as in (a); or (c) when R 2 and B 3 form a heterocyclic ring fused to the benzene ring, reacting a compound of the formula with R 4 -halide in the presence of alkali, nitrating the resulting 'alkylated" product with HNO 3 / H 2 SO 4 and reducing the resulting nitro compound as in (a). The products are useful as photographic developers. |
