The device coats a precisely defined region of a cylindrical workpiece with a viscous fluid. A multiple outlet channel applicator head has tubular outlets (36) which extend below the lower surface of the applicator head (34) and through which the viscous medium (44) may flow. Below the head (34) is a pathway (30) for transport of the workpieces (10) such that their axes are vertical and horizontal to the direction of travel respectively. The separation of the workpiece (10) and applicator head (34) tubes (36) in such that the drops of viscous medium hanging from the tubes (36) become coated onto the external surface of the workpiece (10) in the appropriate regions.
