Piston rod has dry sliding bearing very close to piston to give good lateral support. The piston rings, when first installed, press against the cylinder wall but after some running-in they are prevented from further outward radial movement, pref. by a metal collar or the piston ring which bears against internal shoulders in the piston ring groove. Materials for sliding bush and rings is pref. TFE.
