1467887 Carbon articles UNITED STATES ENERGY RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT ADMINISTRATION 16 May 1974 [5 June 1973] 21713/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division A5] A carbon article for prosthetic purposes comprises a section 1 consisting essentially of graphite and/or amorphous carbon, and having uniformly dispersed substantially parallel pores 2 passing therethrough, these pores being at least 50 Á in diameter, and covering at least 25% of the cross-section of said article, the matrix between the pores having less than 25% porosity. A method is also disclosed for making said article by coating a fugitive fibre with a slurry comprising a carbon powder filler and a settable carbon precursor binder; and arranging the fibres in a parallel array, pressing, heating, removing said fibre, carbonizing at 600- 1200‹ C. and, if desired, graphitizing at 2400- 3000‹ C. A fugitive fibre is one that is thermally removable by fusion or volatilization (e.g. nylon, polymeric acetates or copper) or removable by dissolution (e.g. Cu, Ni, Fe, Sn and alloys thereof). A suitable binder is partially polymerized furfuryl alcohol. |
