1468441 Graphite BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 14 Aug 1975 [2 Sept 1974] 38183/74 Heading C1A A graphite containing carbon suitable as a catalyst support characterized by a basal plane surface area of at least 100 m.<SP>2</SP>/g., a ratio of BET surface area to basal plane surface area of not more than 5 : 1 and a ratio of basal plane surface area to edge surface area of at least 5 : 1, is prepared by heating a carbon having BET surface area in the range 100-3000 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. to a temperature in the range 900-3300‹ C. in an inert atmosphere, heating in an oxidizing atmosphere at 300-1200‹ C. and optionally further heating in an inert atmosphere in the range 900-3000‹ C., the final temperature preferably being not greater than the final temperature of the first heat treatment. The basal plane surface area is preferably in the range 150-1000 m.<SP>2</SP>/g. The ratio of BET surface area to basal plane area preferably tends to 1 : 1. The ratio of the basal plane surface area to the edge surface area is preferably greater than 10 : 1, most preferably greater than 300 : 1. The graphite containing carbon suitably has a pH in the range 5-9 and contains less than 1% of adsorbed oxygen. The ash content is preferably less than 0À1% and the total metals content is preferably less than 250 ppm. |
