1391884 Vinyl chloride and 1,2-dichloroethane LUMMUS CO 23 July 1973 [24 July 1972] 35086/73 Heading C2C Vinyl chloride and 1,2-dichloroethane are produced by contacting fresh hydrocarbon feed which is ethane or ethylene or a mixture thereof with a melt comprising a multivalent metal chloride in both its higher and lower valence states in the presence of 0-1 to 0-5 moles of dichloroethylene per mole of fresh hydrocarbon feed. The metal chloride is preferably of Cu, Cr, Co, Mn or Fe and a melting point depressant such as an alkali metal chloride or a metal chloride of a metal heavier than Cu of Group I, II, III or IV of the Periodic Table is optionally present, e.g. KCl. The feed and melt may be contacted with HCl and/or Cl 2 . The effluent may include C 2 H 5 Cl, C 2 H 4 , C 2 H 6 and CH 2 Cl 2 which are recovered and recycled to the contacting stage. The 1,2-dichloroethane recovered from the effluent may be dehydrochlorinated to vinyl chloride, e.g. over a multivalent metal chloride melt.
|
