The level electrode is enclosed in a protective tube ending below the monitored water level. It has a hole for the water passage, and a pressure equalising hole in the steam space. A reference electrode (11) is provided in the steam space (4) extending to the pressure equalising hole (7) in the protective tube (5). The electrodes may be retained in an inner protective tube by insulating conical bushes with an external shoulder which fits the tube and an internal orifice which fits the electrode wire just above an additional small cylindrical disc seal.
