A plastics dowel for securing panels together to form items of furniture, has a serrated conical portion (4) which is inserted into a hole bored into the panel. The size of the hole enables this portion to be inserted quite easily. The remainder is then forced in tightly. This portion (4) is hollow, and is attached to a solid portion (2) which is similarly serrated (21), and the plain circular section stem (11) is at the rear. The front part (4) is attached to the solid part (2) by a thin connecting ring (3) so that when the rear part is driven home, the ring breaks and the solid part is forced inside. Its serrations then expand the front part, for a light fit. The latter incorporates slits (6) to permit the expansion. an internal flange (42) near the breaking point retains the serrations.
