To recover binary information from an errored composite baseband signal, in particular a D2-MAC signal, a control signal for a control amplifier (V) is derived from a peak value detection (SD1, SD2). Signal components which lie outside this data burst are blanked out in the control procedure. The output signal of the control amplifier (V) is fed to a duobinary-binary decoder (DB) whose discriminator thresholds are controlled according to the positive and negative peak values of the data burst. Due to the measures of the invention, the duobinary-binary decoder (DB) always operates in optimum fashion independently of the signal amplitude of the signal to be decoded. <IMAGE>
