The pinion of the servo assisted steering is mounted in a support jig whose displacement controls the amount of servo force. The rack is then driven by the combined force of the pinion and the servo. The pinion is coupled to the steering column by a coupling plate with parallel sides. The plate is held in the steering housing between two sets of axial bearings. The bearings have simple plastic cages and allow the pinion jig to swing with the steering reaction force, without requiring a complex universal joint.
