The IC engine exhaust system with afterburner, embodies two points in the gas path where the gas is throttled sharply, setting up a temp. barrier: one at entry to the afterburning zone and one at exit from it. In both cases a thin ring shaped nozzle is used. The first (26) is formed between the combustion tube (4) and an enlarged portion of the transfer tube (13) conveying secondary air, supplied under pressure and preheated, to a conical perforated plate type diffuser (27) injecting it into the gas stream. The second (6) located behind the flow-reversing chamber (5), produces an injector effect drawing cold secondary air into a mixing chamber (7). The dilluted gases then flow through a post-combustion chamber (8) and multiple cooling tubes (9) into a cooling and silencing zone (19), made up mostly of perforated plates. Some of these perforations (14) allow pressurised air to enter from the reaction zone.
|
