Normal braking is accomplished by an electro dynamic brake to reduce the trains speed from a first velocity to a reduced velocity at which point the electro dynamic brake is automatically switched off and the train halted by a friction brake. Should one or more axle wheels lock during the electrodynamic braking process the friction brake anti skid regulator of the axle wheel or wheels concerned automatically switches off the electro dynamic brake, and changes over to friction braking. The trains retard rate remains unaltered and braking power is disconnected from the axle wheel or wheels which are locked. A time unit is provided to restore electro dynamic braking after a predetermined time lapse.
