1467371 Aromatic diurethanes, their preparation and herbicidal applications SCHERING AG 26 FEB 1974 [1 March 1973] 8622/74 Heading C2C [Also in Division A5] The invention comprises compounds of Formula I in which R 1 represents an n-propyl, n-butyl, isobutyl or benzyl group; R 2 represents a phenyl group, optionally substituted by one or more substituents selected from CH 3 , C 2 H 5 , OCH 3 , SCH 3 and Cl; R 3 represents CH 3 or C 2 H 5 and X represents oxygen or sulphur which may be prepared by reacting (a) a compound of general Formula II or an alkaline metal salt thereof with a carbamoyl chloride of formula optionally in the presence of a tertiary organic base, at 0-100‹ C., (b) a compound of general Formula III with an amine of formula in the presence of an acid-binding agent, e.g. an inorganic or tertiary organic base, or (c) by catalytically hydrogenating a nitro compound of Formula IV to form the corresponding amine which is then reacted with a compound of general formula in the presence of an acid-binding agent. Herbicidal compositions comprise at least one compound of Formula I together with a carrier and optionally other components such as plant protecting agents, pest combating agents, e.g. fungicides, nematicides, fertilizers and surfaceactive agents.
