1467156 Polymer derivatives SANDOZ Ltd 2 April 1974 [3 April 1973] 14648/74 Heading C3P Polymer derivatives are prepared by condensing (1) a carboxyl group bearing polymer of molecular weight 300 to 10,000, (2) a primary aliphatic amine containing 1-6 hydroxyl groups, (3) an epihalohydrin and (4) a C 11-22 alkyl or alkenyl group-containing mono- or polyamine unsubstituted or substituted on the alk(en)yl group by hydroxyl and/or on the amino function(s) by C 1-3 alkyl which may be substituted by hydroxyl and/or a group of formula -(CHRCH 2 O) + H or where R is H, methyl or ethyl and r is 2 to 30. The polymer may be an oxidized polyethylene or a copolymer of ethylene with acrylic, methacrylic or ethacrylic acid. Aqueous dispersions of the products may be used for imparting washproof soft handle to fibres of synthetic polymers. Many suitable reactants are specified and examples describe reaction products of oxidized polyethylene, monoethanolamine, epichlorohydrin and (1) stearylamine, (2) n-C 18-22 alkylamines, (3) n-C 18-22 alkylaminopropylamine, (6) stearoyl dipropylene triamine and (7) 1 - aminoethyl - 2 - stearyl imidazoline; (4) ethylene/acrylic acid copolymer, monoethanolamine, epichlorhydrin and stearylamine; and (5) oxidized polyethylene, 1-amino-2-propanol, epichlorhydrin and stearylamine. |
