The adjuster works via a closed hydraulic circuit with two cavities closed off by respective piston and cylinder units, each filled with an elastically deformable bubble, contg. compressible hydraulic medium such that any tilting movement of the backrest results in relative movement between the two cylinder units, thus enlarging one and contracting the other cavity. Each cavity consists of a first part (24) and adjacent second part (25) which adjust in size in opposed senses and are each closed off by an annular segment chamber fixed w.r.t. the seat or backrest and a piston, which moves round the segment chamber centre. The second cavity parts, moving opposite ways, are limited by the cylinders and their pistons, which adjust off a motor or hand powered self-locking drive. Each bubble (28) is completely enclosed.
