The invention relates to a mechanical letter-opener. This letter-opener comprises a support (S), a cutting blade (10) which is substantially straight and attached to the support, a means (P1 to P7) for the blade to pivot freely around at least one rotational axis (R1) in relation to the support, a guide member (11a) for moving the envelope in an area and in one direction of movement, and resilient return means (16) for returning the blade to a starting position once it has been rotated by the driving action of the envelope in relation to the support. This letter-opener is characterized in that the pivot means (P1 to P7) provides at least one second rotational axis (R2), distinct from the first, for the blade. This letter-opener is intented for the opening of envelopes of all kinds, whether manually or automatically.
