1467334 Surgical dressing T S HARGEST 5 March 1974 [26 March 1973] 9797/74 Heading A5R A method of forming a surgical dressing comprises applying to a wound site non-toxic sterile glass microparticles of specific gravity greater than 1.0 and a size between 30 and 150 mesh and preferably between 70 and 100 mesh (American Standard). A high silica content glass e.g. soda-lime glass is effective because sodium ions are released when the glass is exposed to aqueous fluids, raising the pH of the blood to create a bacteriostatic or bacteriocidal environment. The external or internal injury may have been caused by abrasion, ulceration, surgery, a burn or a cut. The sterile, spherical microparticles are applied directly to the injury and may be eventually removed, absorbed by the body tissue or indefinitely retained in place. No overlying bandage is necessary and the particles are a thermal insulator. |
