Novel aldehyde-phenols of formula (I) (where R1 and R5 are each H or CH3; or R1 and R2 and/or R4 and R5 form together a tetramethylene gp; R2 is alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl gp.; R3 is OH; R4 is H, alkyl, cycloalkyl or aralkyl; R6 is alkyl, aralkyl, acyloxyalkyl, hydroxyalkyl or phenyl; R& is alkyl, phenyl, a gp. of formula (II) or, with R6, forms an alkylene radical; and n is 0 or 1). Pref. R1 = H or CH3; R2, R4 and R6 are 1-4C alkyl gps; R3 is OH; R5 is H or R7 is 1-2C alkul or a gp. of formula (II) or, with R6, forms a 5C alkylene gp. and n = 1. (I) are used as antioxidants and stabilisers of organic materials such as polymers derived from olefinic hydrocarbons, halovinyl cpds., unsatd. acids, alcohols, acetals, urethanes, amides etc. It is useful in material or synthetic materials e.g. mineral oils.
