The road surface compacting roller has a diesel engine (3) which is mounted on a frame (1) which is supported on two bands (2b) mounted on parallel shafts. The bands are driven through a belt drive (8) to propel the machine over the road surface. Each roller is vibrated by a rotary, out-of-balance shaft (12) which is driven from a hydraulic motor (14). This motor is supplied with hydraulic fluid from a pump module (4), consisting of a variable displacement pump and an auxiliary pump which delivers fluid to the inlet of the variable displacement pump. The hydraulic motor is set in motion or stopped by a clutch (7) via a valve which directs the auxiliary pump delivery either to the inlet of the variable displacement pump or directly to the sump.
