The bars are of magnetic ink and may be printed randomly, with different bars overlapping, in two printing passes. The bars are read by applying a low field to activate the soft bars and reading them, applying a high field to actuate the hard bars, applying a loop field to erase the activated soft bars and reading the hard bars. The distribution and spacing of the bars may identify the card. After the printing operation the data is read and recorded in track 2. |
