Solid contaminating particles, down to less than 1 micron dia, are removed from non-conductive liq such as hydraulic oil or transformer oil rising from a base inlet in a rectangular tank, by the electro-static field produced by a series of spaced upright electrodes earthed or at high potential. Between the electrodes, separator plates of dielectric material e.g. paper foam or glass fabric, in a stack of superimposed layers inclined at 3-10 deg. from the field, have holes, pref near the electrodes, for passage of dielectric liq. The layers may be zig-zag folded strip in a cassette.
