The supercharged IC engine is provided with a by-pass pipe, which allows some of the exhaust gases to by-pass the turbine. The exhaust has a silencer (14) with an inlet (2) for the exhaust gases from the turbine. The inlet is aligned with a pipe (13) mounted in a chamber (18) at the front of the silencer. The chamber pipe is supported by three radial projections (16) in the wall (15) dividing the chamber from the main chamber (26). The projections are so arranged that passages are formed in the wall. The turbine by-pass pipe is connected to a second inlet pipe (19), and the exhaust gases from it exert an ejector effect on the main exhaust flow through the chamber pipe.
