Cis-epoxy succinate prepn. in high purity - by reaction of a maleate with hydrogen peroxide using tungstate or molybdate catalyst

Cis-epoxy-succinate of high purity is prepd. by reaction of maleate and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst tungstate or molybdate, which is recovered and recycled. The catalyst which is then absorbed on strongly-basic anion-exchange resin, and then eluted with aq. soln. of alkali metal hydroxide or basic alkali metal salt to form an alkaline soln. is mised with maleic acid (anhydride) and hydrogen peroxide to repeat the reaction. The prod. is an inter. for racemic tartaric acid, PVC additive, precursor of epoxy resin, detergent builder, etc.
