Cigarettes cigars or stopped pipes produce a lower carbon monoxide content in the smoke if one or more cavities are left in the volume normally occupied by tobacco. The wall surrounding the cavity is impermeable to air and the cavities can remain empty or filled with rolled paper or cellulose-containing material. Opt. the cavity wall or filling if present may be impregnated with oxidiser. The content of toxic CO in the smoke is reduced by over 40%. The tobacco taste is not affected because the cigarette burns at the same rate as a conventional cigarette. The content of toxic matter other than CO is not increased and the cigarettes can be produced simply and with little extra cost.
